Cavin has highly influential jaundice. Why?
-He was born sideways (horizontal) instead of vertical like babies are supposed to be born. His actual delivery was rushed a bit as his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and leg. As a result he has a lot of bruising. The red blood cells in the bruising turn into bilirubin which his liver isn't able to rid of, which has caused jaundice.
-Our, Cavin and mama's, blood types are doing a little battle of their own.
-We are having a hard time getting Cavin to nurse. Since he had jaundice from the get-go, which makes him tired, he falls asleep instead of nursing.
So Cavin was put under blue "bililights" this morning at 11:00am with a bilirubin level of 8.8. The ultraviolet lights turn the bilirubin into a form Cavin can more easily dispose of. The only time he is allowed out from under the lights is to nurse. This evening his bilirubin levels measured at 8.6. Its good news that his bilirubin levels have not risen, but not great news as it means Cavin has made little progress disposing of all the bilirubin.
Its been hard on both of us today to just sit here and watch our baby under the lights. Its a complete bummer to not be able to love on him.
Not sure when we'll be coming home as Cavin won't be released until his levels drop.
Please pray for Cavin's liver to catch up and be able to dispose of his high bilirubin levels. In order for that to happen, he needs to nurse well tonight and will continue to be under the bililights.
I know it is hard to watch him under the lights, but soon you will get to take your baby boy home! This happened to our Ruthie too because she was born early and had a hard time nursing. It only took her a couple days to get her level down. Still continuing to pray that you get to take Cavin home very soon!
